History of the Poinsettia

The vibrant, crimson plant that lights up our homes every Christmas season has a history as rich and colourful as its leaves. Far from being a simple Christmas decoration, the poinsettia carries a legacy that stretches back hundreds of years to the heart of Mexico. Before it was a holiday star, the poinsettia was known to the Aztecs in 14th-century Mexico as cuetlaxochitl, meaning “mortal flower.” Growing as tall shrubs, they had practical, not just decorative, value! The striking red leaves (actually modified leaves called bracts) were used to create a reddish-purple dye for fabrics and cosmetics. Its milky sap (latex) was utilised in traditional medicine to control fevers and treat other ailments. Aztec rulers, like Montezuma, prized the plant and had it brought into the capital.

The Mexican Flower

As Christianity spread, the plant became associated with the Christmas season because it naturally blooms during Mexico’s winter months. It earned the name Flor de la Nochebuena (Flower of the Holy Night). The well-known Mexican folk tale tells of a poor girl named Pepita, who had no gift for the Baby Jesus on Christmas Eve Mass. She was told that any gift given with love would be acceptable. Heartbroken, she gathered a humble bouquet of weeds from the roadside. When she placed them at the altar, they miraculously transformed into the brilliant red flowers we now call poinsettias.

An American Introduction

The plant’s journey to global fame began in 1828 with Joel Roberts Poinsett, an avid botanist and the first U.S. Minister to Mexico. Captivated by the wild, flame-coloured blooms he saw near Taxco, he sent cuttings back to his greenhouse in South Carolina. The plant eventually took Poinsett’s name, but its rise to ultimate holiday icon status was secured in the 20th century by the Ecke family in California. They pioneered cultivating techniques that produced the dense, full plants we see today and launched a massive marketing campaign, including sending plants to television shows, to link the poinsettia to the American Christmas tradition. From ancient medicine to a modern holiday staple, the poinsettia is truly a plant with a beautiful, enduring story!
