Low maintenance plants Devils Ivy

Devil’s Ivy

Devil’s Ivy is a must-have plant for beginner gardeners. This plant is a popular pick for indoor spaces and apartments since it is versatile, tolerates low light, can easily be propagated in water, and efficiently cleanses the air of pollutants. With its long stems, heart-shaped leaves, and bushy growth, Devil’s Ivy immediately brings life to any space it inhabits. As a bonus, it will grow almost anywhere — from dimly-lit corners to brightly lit rooms, this plant can even be grown in a hanging basket for added dimension. Elevating your Pothos in a hanging basket or pot is a good idea if you have pets around the house since this plant unfortunately isn’t pet-friendly.

For best results, keep your Devil’s Ivy in moderately light to bright indirect light indoors. When watering, wait for the top 3-5cm of the soil to dry out to avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Devil’s Ivy can be propagated quite easily in water by snipping a small length of the stem just beneath the leaves’ woody protrusions and placing this stem in a jar of water. Allow the cuttings to soak up bright, filtered light for about two weeks until roots start to appear and the new plant can be transferred to potting soil. Just like that — you have a new plant to add to your collection! Read our Devil’s Ivy care guide here.

Low maintenance plants Zanzibar Gem

Zanzibar Gem

The Zanzibar Gem, also known as the ZZ Plant, is a tropical plant native to eastern Africa. This is a fantastic low-maintenance plant for new gardeners. ZZ Plants are tolerant of drought and low light and can survive without care for several weeks. Since these plants don’t typically grow larger than 60cm in height, they don’t need to be repotted frequently — another bonus! Although ZZ Plants are resistant to neglect, it is best advised to provide them with moderate light to bright indirect light indoors. Their hydration needs are fairly low and the soil should be allowed to dry out between waterings. Depending on the temperature and humidity of the environment, ZZ Plants only need to be watered every 2-4 weeks — the perfect plant for someone who is often away from home!

To propagate a ZZ Plant, cut short stalks from the base of the mother plant’s growth. Allow the cuttings to dry out for a few hours before placing them in water. New roots will start forming within a couple of weeks, after which the new plants can be transferred to soil in a small pot. For best results, group a few different cuttings together in the pot to encourage compact root growth. Keep the young new plants hydrated during their first few weeks until they are firmly growing in the soil. Zanzibar Gems are not pet-friendly and should be kept out of reach of animals and children. Low maintenance plants Monstera Deliciosa

Monstera Deliciosa

The Monstera Deliciosa is one of the most popular and easily recognisable indoor plants. This tropical plant impresses with its broad, glossy leaves and instantly turns its surroundings into a little home jungle! Also known as Swiss Cheese, the Monstera is native to southern Mexico’s tropical forests. Replicating a tropical atmosphere for your Monstera will help it stay healthy and grow to its full potential. Monsteras enjoy moderate light to bright indirect light indoors, although it also tolerates low light. This plant needs moderate water and higher levels of humidity. Another important care routine for Monsteras is cleaning their leaves with a damp cloth to prevent dust and dirt buildup.

The Monstera is not fussy and doesn’t require expert attention to stay happy. If you want to take on a gardening challenge, you can even try to propagate your Monstera to expand your indoor tropical jungle. Propagation also helps to trim plants when they grow too large or become lopsided. Monsteras are best propagated during the spring and summer months since this is their optimum time for growing. Simply cut a stem below the aerial root or leaf node and place it in a jar of water. Cutting the stem at an angle will enhance its ability to soak up water during this step. Leave the jar in a light-filled spot and allow the cutting to grow plenty of roots before transferring into potting soil or compost. Easy as that! Read our Monstera Deliciosa care guide here.

Low maintenance plants Money Plant Jade Plant

Jade Plant (Money Plant)

Succulents are widely known and loved for their low maintenance needs — every forgetful plant parent’s dream! The Jade Plant, also known as the Money Plant, is one of our favourite succulents. Native to South Africa and Mozambique, this plant comes with gorgeous pink and white flowers that stand out against its fleshy, round leaves. The Jade Plant is extremely drought-tolerant and can go without water for about 2-3 weeks. It prefers part shade although it can tolerate bright light indoors.

Like most succulents, Jade Plants can easily be propagated by taking a cutting from the mother plant and placing it in a dry, warm spot for about two weeks until it develops a callus. Then the cutting is ready to be transferred into a healthy potting mixture until it takes root. Jade Plants are not only ideal for beginner gardeners, but they also make wonderful gift plants. With their peculiar leaves that resemble jade coins, this plant is a symbol of wealth and prosperity. Gifting this plant to someone is a beautiful gesture, and, as a bonus, anyone would be able to take care of it! Read our Jade Plant care guide here.
