How to care for your Peace Lily
Originating from the tropical regions of America and Southeast Asia, the Peace Lily requires bright, indirect light. Although this plant can adapt to other lighting conditions, it should be kept out of the full sun to avoid burning the leaves. To prevent drastic changes in temperature around the plant, do not place your Peace Lily next to a heating/cooling vent or near an open window.
Peace Lilies do not have strict soil requirements. A general well-draining potting soil should be more than sufficient for this plant to thrive. Be sure to use planting containers with draining holes to allow the water to flow all the way through the soil. Depending on the rate of growth, peace lilies should be repotted every two to three years as needed.
Like most tropical indoor plants, the Peace Lily needs to be watered frequently but should never be overwatered. Allow the top layer of the soil to mostly dry out before watering the plant again. If possible, use distilled water or tap water that has been sitting out overnight to allow the chemicals in the water to evaporate. Lightly mist the leaves with water to increase the humidity.
If you notice your indoor potted Peace Lily’s leaves becoming dry, it is a sign of drought and insufficient humidity. You could introduce a humidifier, increase the frequency of watering or simply group several indoor plants together to enhance the level of humidity. If the leaves are turning brown, it is likely that the plant is being overwatered or that the water does not effectively drain through the soil. Spotting on the leaves may indicate overexposure to direct light.
