Caring for your Monstera Deliciosa
When it comes to tropical plants such as the Monstera Deliciosa, it’s important to replicate the plant’s native growing conditions to help it flourish in your home. Monsteras prefer moderate light to bright indirect light indoors and can also tolerate low-light conditions. Be sure to rotate your Monstera about once a week to ensure the plant is exposed to equal amounts of light from all sides.
Monsteras need to be watered at least once a week. Be mindful of overwatering your indoor plants, especially during the colder months when their growth slows down and water is retained for longer. Allow the top 2-3 cm of the soil to dry out between watering sessions. Monsteras need high levels of humidity to thrive. You can increase the humidity in the plant’s environment by misting the leaves with water, placing several indoor plants close to one another, or using a humidifier. In terms of temperature, Monsteras grow best in moderate temperatures of around 16-30°C.
Plant your Monsteras in well-draining potting soil. Use planting containers with draining holes at the bottom to prevent the roots from sitting in the water for too long. Monsteras need to be repotted at least once every 18-24 months — potentially more frequently, depending on the growth of the plant.
Remember to regularly clean your Monsteras by gently wiping the leaves with a damp cloth. Problems such as pests can be treated by spraying the plant with a natural pesticide. If you notice your Monstera’s leaves turning brown or wilting, it may be a sign of drought. If the leaves are turning yellow and the stems are becoming black and soggy, it is likely that the roots are rotting due to overwatering.
Take note that Monsteras can cause irritation to both humans and pets if consumed. If you have animals and young kids in the house, play it safe by placing any Monsteras out of reach of curious hands!
