Taking care of your Bird’s Nest Fern
This plant is relatively easy to care for. Its care instructions are similar to that of most indoor tropical plants. The Bird’s Nest Fern prefers filtered sunlight although it will also grow well in a moderately shaded spot. Avoid exposing your Bird’s Nest Fern to direct sunlight since this harsh lighting can scorch the leaves. Warm temperatures ranging from 18°C to 26°C are ideal for this plant. Don’t place it near a heating/air conditioning vent or an open window when cold drafts may enter.
The Bird’s Nest Fern needs to be watered consistently. Wait for the top layer of the soil to dry out in between watering sessions. Water the soil directly — avoid wetting the leaves to prevent moisture buildup. Reduce the frequency of watering during colder months to avoid overwatering the plant during its slow-growing season. Maintain the plant’s humidity levels by placing it in a moderately moist environment such as a bathroom or kitchen. You can also use a humidifier or set the planting container on a tray filled with pebbles and water to increase the humidity.
When repotting your Bird’s Nest Fern, use well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Peat-based potting mixes work well for indoor plants planted in containers. As a general guideline, young Bird’s Nest Ferns shouldn’t be repotted more than once a year while more mature plants will likely only need to be upgraded to a bigger container every 2-3 years. If you want to use a fertiliser, do so sparingly and only during the plant’s growing season in spring and summer.
