How to Care for a Spider Plant

Spider Plants Care - Spider Plant

Spider Plants are one of the most popular indoor plants thanks to their unique and eye-catching leaves as well as their incredible air-purifying qualities. Also known as the Ribbon Plant, this low maintenance plant is a great fit for any household since it is pet-friendly and so easy to care for. With their bushy foliage and long extending leaves, Spider Plants make great hanging plants and are often used as a centrepiece in interior decoration.

Here’s how to care for your Spider Plant.

Spider Plant Care

Light

This plant prefers bright indirect light indoors. It can also tolerate low to medium light settings. Do not expose to direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves.

Water

As with many indoor plants, the Spider Plants need to be watered frequently without overwatering, which can quickly cause the roots to rot. Keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy is key.

Tip: the top of the soil may look dry but it can be wet beneath, so before watering your plant, dip your finger into the soil to feel the level of moisture. If it feels soggy, wait for another day or two.

Temperature & Humidity

Spider Plants prefer cooler temperatures, ideally below 20°C. If your Spider Plant has any brown leaf tips it may be an indication that the air is too dry, which you can treat by misting the leaves with water about once or twice a week.

Maintenance

Spider Plants generally require little maintenance and don’t need to be fertilised frequently (at most every two months during spring and summer). This plant is a fast grower but doesn’t necessarily need to be repotted very often. Only repot your Spider Plant when its roots become visible above the ground. Spider Plant propagation can easily be done by cutting the new plantlets or “spiderettes” from the mother plant and replanting it in soil.
