How to care for a Money Plant or Jade Plant

Jade Plant Money Tree White Ceramic Pot 150mm 2

The Money Plant or Jade Plant (Crassula Ovata) is a popular houseplant recognised for its fleshy, round leaves and woody stems. Known to some as the Money Plant, this low maintenance succulent shrub is great for beginners.

Here’s how to care for your Jade Plant.

Jade Plant Money Tree

Light

The Jade Plant grows well in part shade to full sun where it can soak up 4-6 hours of sunshine each day, preferably in the morning. Keep in mind that the afternoon heat (especially in summer) can burn the plant. If growing indoors, it can also tolerate medium light, but try to find a sunny spot; near or on a window sill.

Water

Like all succulents, the Jade Plant is a hardy plant that can last a long time without water, but it grows best with moderate watering during the growing season (spring and summer). To find out if your Jade Plant is thirsty – dip your finger into the soil. If the soil is dry to the touch, it’s time to water. Water the soil thoroughly and wait for the water to drain through, then empty any excess water sitting in the saucer. Allow the soil to dry out before watering again. In the cooler months, your plant won’t need much water.

Temperature & Humidity

The Jade Plant prefers warm temperatures and average humidity.

Maintenance

Feed your Money Plant in the warmer months with a houseplant liquid fertiliser.

Re-pot your Money Plant once every 1 to 2 years to encourage growth. Best time to re-pot is in the early spring. Pot your Money Plant in a slightly larger pot with a premium succulent potting mix. Wait for several days before watering your freshly potted Money Plant.

Troubleshooting

Jade Plant leaves are shrivelling

Shrivelled leaves on your Jade Plant are a sign of underwatering. In the growing season (spring to summer), your Jade Plant will need more water to grow. Make sure you water your plant thoroughly. Allow the top 3-5cm of soil to dry out before watering again.

Jade Plant leaves are turning yellow

Yellow leaves on your Jade Plant are commonly caused by overwatering. Make sure you allow the soil to dry out before watering again.

Jade Plant leaves are dropping

Low light is the main cause of leaf drop in Jade Plant. Move your Jade Plant where it will receive at least 4-6 hours of bright light. Other causes of leaf drop are poor drainage, temperature fluctuations and pests.

Pest problems

Treat pests as soon as they appear. To remove the pests on your Jade Plant, spray your plant with soapy water or use a cotton bud dipped in rubbing alcohol and apply directly on the bugs and infected areas. Repeat application once a week as required until the problem is resolved.
